With just two weeks before classes begin, the Houlton regional school district is racing to fill nine staff vacancies, facing a challenge echoed by schools nationwide.
Superintendent Joe Fagnant says the district may need to rely on experienced substitute teachers and educational technicians to cover roles at the start of the year. The district is seeking a mix of classroom educators, including a first grade teacher, long-term substitutes, and several ed techs, following recent departures and retirements.
A key vacancy includes the principal position at Houlton Middle High School, after DeWayne Morse’s retirement in May. Morse, known for his student-centered leadership during the toughest days of the pandemic, leaves behind a legacy of support and inclusivity for students. Finding his successor has proven difficult; the search committee could not find a candidate ready to step in on short notice. As an interim solution, a leadership team comprising the assistant principal, director of guidance, assistant superintendent, and Fagnant will oversee the school until a new principal is hired. Fagnant points to wider issues contributing to unfilled jobs, from fewer people entering education to challenges in recruiting within a shrinking population. The district has adjusted pay scales and is proactively posting job openings, urging qualified community members to help ensure a strong school year ahead. |

Tip of The Day |
😴 Tip of the Day: Protect Your Rest
Don’t wait until you’re exhausted to decide it’s time to sleep. Give yourself a regular bedtime and create a 30–60 minute wind-down period beforehand. Dim the lights, put away stimulating screens when possible, keep the room cool and quiet, and let tomorrow’s problems wait until tomorrow.
Most adults generally need at least 7 hours of sleep each night, although individual needs vary.
And remember: rest isn’t wasted time—it’s maintenance. A well-rested mind reacts faster, makes better decisions, and handles stress more effectively.
Today’s reminder: You recharge your phone before it hits zero. Give yourself the same consideration. |

💡 Answer to Trivia Question: 👉 Answer: D — More than 100 mph!
Powerful microbursts can produce straight-line winds exceeding 100 mph, strong enough to uproot trees, damage buildings, overturn vehicles, and create conditions comparable to some tornadoes.
🌪️ Bonus Trivia: Unlike a tornado's rotating winds, a microburst occurs when a powerful downdraft hits the ground and spreads rapidly outward—sometimes across an area only a few miles wide. |
