Most visitors begin around Market Square, Houlton's historic downtown district. Here you'll find local restaurants, coffee shops, specialty stores, and one of Maine's oldest operating movie theaters.
An evening movie at Temple Theatre is a local tradition. The historic theater regularly shows current releases and weekend matinees. Typical showtimes include evenings during the week and afternoon/evening showings on weekends.
Saturday mornings are also worth exploring downtown when the Houlton Community Farmers' Market is operating. Local produce, baked goods, crafts, and Maine-made products give newcomers a great introduction to the area. |

The easiest place to start is Houlton Riverfront Park. Open year-round, the park connects to walking trails along the Meduxnekeag River and offers a relaxing place to walk, run, or simply unwind after work.
Nearby, you'll find the Meduxnekeag River Trail system, providing miles of scenic walking through forests and along the river. It's one of the most popular outdoor destinations in town.
If you enjoy golf, the Houlton Community Golf Course near Nickerson Lake offers a relaxing evening round during the summer months.
Just minutes from Downtown Houlton, Shady Ridge Disc Golf Course in Littleton offers 18 professionally designed holes winding through scenic Northern Maine woods and open fairways. Whether you're a first-time player or an experienced competitor, it's a unique outdoor adventure that combines recreation, challenge, and some of the best views in Southern Aroostook.
