Welcome to Houlton, Maine β the End of I-95 and the Beginning of Northern Maine Adventure.
If you're in town for a few weeks or a few months working as a traveling nurse, contractor, utility worker, engineer, truck driver, consultant, or seasonal employee, you're probably asking the same question many newcomers ask:
"What is there to do around here when I'm not working?"
The good news is that while Houlton may be a small town, it sits at the gateway to some of Maine's best outdoor recreation, local dining, community events, and authentic small-town experiences. |
where to begin? | ||
Start Downtown |
Most visitors begin around Market Square, Houlton's historic downtown district. Here you'll find local restaurants, coffee shops, specialty stores, and one of Maine's oldest operating movie theaters.
An evening movie at Temple Theatre is a local tradition. The historic theater regularly shows current releases and weekend matinees. Typical showtimes include evenings during the week and afternoon/evening showings on weekends.
Saturday mornings are also worth exploring downtown when the Houlton Community Farmers' Market is operating. Local produce, baked goods, crafts, and Maine-made products give newcomers a great introduction to the area. |
Get Outside |
One thing you'll quickly discover is that people in Northern Maine spend a lot of time outdoors.
The easiest place to start is Houlton Riverfront Park. Open year-round, the park connects to walking trails along the Meduxnekeag River and offers a relaxing place to walk, run, or simply unwind after work.
Nearby, you'll find the Meduxnekeag River Trail system, providing miles of scenic walking through forests and along the river. It's one of the most popular outdoor destinations in town.
If you enjoy golf, the Houlton Community Golf Course near Nickerson Lake offers a relaxing evening round during the summer months.
Just minutes from Downtown Houlton, Shady Ridge Disc Golf Course in Littleton offers 18 professionally designed holes winding through scenic Northern Maine woods and open fairways. Whether you're a first-time player or an experienced competitor, it's a unique outdoor adventure that combines recreation, challenge, and some of the best views in Southern Aroostook.
ATV riders and snowmobilers will discover that Houlton serves as a gateway to hundreds of miles of trail systems throughout Aroostook County. |
Staying Active |
Need to keep your fitness routine going while you're away from home? Many traveling professionals use facilities such as Main Street Fitness Inc or Small Town X-Training. Both offer opportunities to stay active and meet local residents. |
Where the Locals Eat |
One of the fastest ways to get to know a town is through its food. For pizza, many newcomers quickly discover Market Pizza in Market Square.
Looking for authentic barbecue? Try ShireWood SmokeHouse BBQ. If you're grabbing a quick lunch, watch for The Bus food truck around town.
For an after-work drink, places like Bastions Tavern and Wine Until Nine and Martini Bar often become gathering spots where locals and visitors cross paths.
