Your July 4th Weekend Guide to Houlton

Plan ahead: Houlton’s fireworks are Friday, July 3rd, with more local fun through the 4th

Local News

Houlton Fireworks Are Friday Night — So What Happens on the Fourth?

For a 250-year Independence Day milestone, you would think the big question in Houlton would be where to stand for the best view of the July 4 fireworks.

This year, the answer is a little different.

Houlton’s big fireworks show is scheduled for Friday night, July 3, as part of Midnight Madness, the downtown street celebration that has become one of the area’s biggest summer traditions. Visit Aroostook lists Midnight Madness in Houlton for July 3, 2026, with music, vendors, downtown activity, and the kind of small-town energy that brings people out by the thousands.

So what happened to July 4?

After last year’s turmoil around town leadership and the fallout that followed, local conversation has been buzzing. From what we have heard through the small-town grapevine, it appears the Chamber may have been the only group that got its fireworks request and order in early enough to secure the show. Whether that is the full story or not, the result is what matters for families making plans: if you want to see fireworks in Houlton, plan on Friday night.

That does not mean the Fourth is cancelled.

In fact, Saturday, July 4 still has plenty happening in Houlton.

Saturday, July 4 — Parade, Market & Family Fun

The day starts with the kind of hometown celebration that makes Northern Maine feel like Northern Maine.

8:00 AM–3:00 PM — Arts & Crafts Fair
Monument Park
Local vendors, crafts, community shopping, and a good reason to walk around town before the parade.

10:00 AM — Fourth of July Parade
Downtown Houlton
The parade begins at the Catholic Church parking lot and loops through Historic Market Square, Union Square, and back up Military Street. Houlton Parks and Recreation describes it as a mile-long loop and a long-running Houlton tradition.

12:00–6:00 PM — Family Fun Day on the Fourth
Houlton Community Park
Activities include live music by Green St. Projekt, concessions, dunk tank, bike raffle, cornhole tournament, disc golf showcase, bounce house, and water activities.

So yes, Houlton still has a Fourth of July. It just does not appear to have July 4 fireworks this year.

Want Fireworks on the Fourth?

Here Are Nearby Options:

If fireworks on the actual Fourth are part of your family tradition, there are still several places around Aroostook County where you can end the night with a sky full of color.

Island Falls — Walker Settlement / Va Jo Wa Area

For Southern Aroostook families, this may be the easiest July 4 fireworks option.

Walker Settlement Concerts is hosting a July 4 celebration featuring Highway 207 from 6:00–9:00 PM, with music, fun, and fireworks advertised as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebration.

Gates are expected to open around 5:00 PM, with fireworks following the concert. Bring lawn chairs, family, and patriotic spirit.

Good for: Houlton-area families who want a closer fireworks option without driving all the way north.

Caribou — Spud Speedway

Spud Speedway is turning July 4 into a full entertainment night.

Their 2026 schedule lists races, vendors, AC/DC tribute band AD/HD, and fireworks on July 4.  this is one of the bigger July 4 fireworks destinations in Aroostook County.

Good for: Racing fans, music fans, families looking for a bigger night out, and anyone who wants fireworks with a full event atmosphere.

Presque Isle — Aroostook Centre Mall

Presque Isle is expected to have a separate commercially organized fireworks display at the Aroostook Centre Mall on July 4 at dusk. The mall’s public updates have been promoting an Independence Day celebration with family activities and a sky show.

Presque Isle also has other 250th anniversary events planned throughout the year, making it one of the larger regional hubs for America 250 activity in Aroostook County.

Good for: Families already heading north, shoppers, visitors, and people looking for a larger-town Fourth of July option.

Maybe this year’s schedule is a little confusing. Maybe it reflects some local fallout from last year. Maybe it is just one of those small-town planning lessons that everyone remembers for next time.

But America only turns 250 once.

So make the plan, fill the cooler, bring the lawn chairs, wave the flag, support the vendors, and celebrate the weekend anyway.

Because in Northern Maine, the Fourth of July has never been just about fireworks.

It has always been about showing up.

Interesting Facts
