Small Habits, Big Results: The Simple Daily Routine That Keeps Me Moving |
βοΈ Health Reminder:
In a world full of complicated fitness programs, expensive supplements, and endless health advice, it's easy to overlook the simple things that often make the biggest difference.
Over the years, I've learned that consistency beats intensity. You don't need to train for a marathon. You don't need the latest gadget. You don't need to spend hours in the gym every day. What you do need is a few simple habits that you can stick with. For me, it starts with walking.
Every day, I try to walk for about 30 minutes twice a day. Nothing extreme. Just 15 minutes out and 15 minutes back. Some days it's around the property. Other days it's through the woods, down a local trail, or around the fairways of Shady Ridge Disc Golf Course. Most of the time, I'm joined by Glacier, my trusty four-legged walking partner. Glacier probably thinks he's taking me for a walk rather than the other way around.
Those walks do more than burn calories.
They clear the mind.
They improve circulation.
They help reduce stress.
They get you outside and connected with your surroundings.
The best part is that you don't need a special place to do it.
Southern Aroostook offers plenty of options. Walk around your neighborhood. Take a stroll through downtown Houlton. Explore local trails. Walk the fairways at Shady Ridge Disc Golf Course. Visit a nearby park. Or simply walk around your own yard and property.
The goal isn't speed.
The goal is movement.
Another habit that has made a difference for me is stretching. Every morning when I wake up, I spend about five minutes stretching before I start my day. Then I do another short stretching session before heading to bed.
Nothing complicated.
A few simple stretches help loosen up stiff muscles, improve flexibility, and prepare the body for movement. As we get older, maintaining mobility becomes just as important as maintaining strength. Speaking of strength, one of the easiest exercises almost anyone can do is the wall sit.
Find a wall.
Lean against it.
Slide down until your knees are bent. Hold the position.
Start with 10 to 15 seconds if that's all you can manage. Over time, you can increase the duration.
Wall sits help strengthen your legs, improve endurance, and require absolutely no equipment.
They're simple.
They're effective.
And they can be done almost anywhere.
I also spend about 30 minutes each day doing a light workout in my home gym when i'm not out trimming the course. Nothing fancy. Some resistance training, mobility work, and basic movement.
The key word is light.
Many people think every workout has to leave them exhausted. That's simply not true.
A moderate routine that you can perform consistently often produces better long-term results than an aggressive program you quit after two weeks.
Of course, exercise is only part of the equation. What you put into your body matters just as much. One of the easiest changes many people can make is reducing or eliminating soda.
Liquid calories add up quickly.
Replacing sugary drinks with water can have a surprisingly large impact on energy levels, weight management, and overall health. I also enjoy infusing water with natural flavors.
Cucumber water is refreshing, especially during the summer months. Coconut-infused water can help support hydration and provide electrolytes.
Simple additions like lemon, cucumber, mint, or fruit slices can make drinking water more enjoyable without loading up on sugar. A practical goal is to drink water consistently throughout the day instead of trying to consume it all at once.
Many people find success by aiming for at least 32 ounces during the first half of the day and then continuing to hydrate throughout the afternoon and evening.
The real secret isn't any one exercise or one food. It's stacking small habits.
Walk twice a day.
Stretch when you wake up.
Stretch before bed.
Do a few wall sits.
Drink more water.
Cut back on soda.
Move your body regularly.
None of these actions seem dramatic on their own.
But over weeks, months, and years, they add up.
Small habits become routines.
Routines become lifestyles.
And lifestyles determine outcomes.
The good news is you don't have to start perfectly.
You just have to start.
Maybe that's a 15-minute walk today.
Maybe it's drinking one less soda.
Maybe it's stretching for five minutes tomorrow morning.
Whatever it is, take the first step.
Your future self will thank you for it. |

π Did You Know?
The Solar System Runs Through Aroostook CountyMost visitors have no idea that one of Maine's most unique attractions stretches nearly 100 miles across Aroostook County.
The Maine Solar System Model is the largest three-dimensional scale model of the solar system in the Western Hemisphere.
Using a scale of approximately 1:93 million, the model places the Sun in Presque Isle and spreads the planets along U.S. Route 1 according to their actual relative distances from the Sun.
Here's where it gets interesting for Southern Aroostook: π Pluto is located right here in Houlton at the Visitor Information Center. That means if you're arriving at the end of Interstate 95, you're also arriving at the outer edge of our solar system.
As you travel north through Aroostook County, you'll pass Neptune in Littleton, Uranus in Bridgewater, Saturn in Westfield, and eventually reach the Sun in Presque Isle.
It's a fun way to experience the enormous scale of space while exploring Northern Maine. Quick Solar System Facts
βοΈ The Sun is over 864,000 miles wide. π Earth travels around the Sun at roughly 67,000 miles per hour. πͺ Jupiter is so large that more than 1,300 Earths could fit inside it. βοΈ Pluto is about 3.6 billion miles from the Sun on average.
π Driving from Houlton's Pluto to Presque Isle's Sun takes about the same amount of time it takes light from Pluto to travel a tiny fraction of its journey back to Earth.
The next time you're driving Route 1 through Aroostook County, remember:
You're not just taking a road trip.
You're traveling through a scale model of our solar system.
πΈ Have you stopped at Pluto in Houlton or visited any of the other planets?

A Note From the Editor Welcome!
Whether you're a lifelong resident, a visitor passing through, a road tripper, truck driver, camper, van lifer, or someone simply looking for something to do, we're glad you're here.
Things To Do In Houlton, The County Signal, The Northern Terminus, and our growing network of local media outlets are all operated by Shady Ridge Studios. We currently have four active publications and are continuing to expand as we build a regional discovery network for Southern Aroostook and Northern Maine.
Over the coming months, we'll be adding contests, giveaways, local features, travel tips, business spotlights, event coverage, and opportunities for readers to help shape the content. We want to learn what you want to see.
One advantage we have is speed. In many cases, photos and videos from events around town can be online the next day. Our goal is to help people discover what is happening right now, not weeks after the fact.
As someone who has traveled extensively and arrived in unfamiliar towns at all hours of the day and night, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to find food, fuel, supplies, lodging, showers, or even basic information when you pull into town at 9 PM or 2 AM, after a long day on the road.
That's one reason these publications exist.
We'll be sharing practical information, local knowledge, seasonal tips, and hidden gems that can help residents and visitors make the most of their time here.
I'm also someone who still pays for many things with cash, so I'll keep an eye out for businesses and locations where cash is acceptedβor where it isn't. Rural banking can sometimes move at its own pace, and transfers from out of state or even other parts of Maine occasionally take longer than expected. What you'll find here is a region with plenty of old-fashioned charm, open spaces, camping opportunities, outdoor recreation, and authentic experiences that are becoming harder to find elsewhere.
We're also exploring the idea of custom visitor itineraries. Imagine telling us what you enjoyβATV riding, hiking, paddling, disc golf, camping, fishing, local food, photography, history, or scenic drivesβand we help create a personalized plan for your stay.
There are still a few technical bugs being worked out as we connect websites, newsletters, social channels, and vendor systems, but we're making progress every day.
One quick traveler tip: if you're arriving late and need a shower, the first truck stop on the left off the highway, after exiting the highway, Traveler's Irving Big Stopoffers clean shower facilities and is one of the few places open later in the evening. It's a useful stop for truckers, van lifers, campers, and road trippers.
Most importantly, if you're new to town and looking for something specific, let us know. If we don't already have the answer, we'll do our best to find it and share it with others who may be looking for the same information.
Thank you for joining us as we build something new for Northern Maine. See you out there,
