Residents of Houlton Mobile Home Park are celebrating the end of a nearly seven-year struggle with PFAS-contaminated water, as a major system upgrade now delivers safe, clean drinking water.

As of November 2024, the park is officially connected to the Houlton Water District, marking a long-awaited return to normalcy for the community.

PFAS—known as ā€œforever chemicalsā€ā€”had previously rendered the park’s well water unsafe, far surpassing state health standards and putting residents at risk for serious health issues like cancer and developmental delays.

Tony Brettkelly, the park’s owner, discovered the problem soon after purchasing the property six years ago and joined forces with local and state agencies to find a solution.

With $141,000 in matching funds from Brettkelly and a $1.2 million grant, construction began in August 2024 and finished before winter, ensuring uninterrupted water access for all residents.

Long-time residents, including Phil Pierce, express profound relief as clean water once again flows throughout the park.

This achievement underscores the strength of community collaboration in overcoming environmental challenges.
