Anthropic, a UK-based artificial intelligence startup, has suspended access to its latest AI models following an order from the US Department of Commerce.

The order, which was issued under the Export Administration Regulations, restricts the company from providing access to the models to certain countries, including Russia and China, due to concerns about national security.

The decision to suspend access to the models was made in order to comply with the regulations and avoid potential penalties.

Anthropic's AI models are known for their advanced capabilities in natural language processing and machine learning, and the company has previously worked with a range of partners in industries such as finance, healthcare, and technology.

The suspension of access to the models is likely to have a significant impact on the company's operations and collaborations, as well as on the development and deployment of AI technologies more broadly.

From the Editor's Corner

Welcome to another edition of Things To Do In Houlton.

Well, it's been an interesting week.

As many of you noticed, we had a few growing pains as we began expanding our advertising efforts. To get some placeholder ads running while we built out our library of local photos and content, I uploaded a few AI-generated images. They were never intended to be permanentβ€”just temporary placeholders while we worked behind the scenes.

Unfortunately, an outside advertising company began publishing ads before receiving final approval. That's on me for not disabling that section before handing things over. The result was several ads that didn't accurately represent Houlton or the community we're trying to showcase.

Needless to say, a few people were quick to point it outβ€”and rightfully so.

From Friday night when the ads first appeared until Wednesday evening, we worked to replace them with better creative and more authentic local content. As of this writing, I believe all of those ads have now been updated. If you happen to spot one that slipped through, feel free to let me know.

Behind the scenes, we're continuing to experiment with different content formats, audience targeting, and newsletter strategies. Website traffic is steadily increasing, and we're now focusing heavily on building out local SEO content so visitors can discover Houlton, Southern Aroostook, and the surrounding region through search engines as well as social media.

One challenge we've identified is that conversions from Facebook followers to newsletter subscribers remain lower than we'd like. Because of that, we're adjusting our approach and building more content directly on the websites themselves while creating stronger reasons for readers to subscribe.

The goal remains simple: build a place where residents, visitors, traveling workers, and tourists can find the most useful local information in one location.

Between Things To Do In Houlton and The Northern Terminus, we're slowly building that platform one article, one event, and one story at a time.

Progress may not always be fast, but it's moving in the right direction.

Thank you to everyone who has followed, subscribed, shared a post, offered feedback, or simply encouraged the project along the way. We appreciate your support and look forward to continuing to showcase everything that makes this region special.
